The capital is in optimistic mood

Under Saddam Hussein, the Kurds were heavily oppressed, the region has been neglected.  But after the overthrow of the dictator, 2003, the Kurdish autonomous region, has developed fully. The capital of Erbil, with its one million inhabitants, is in optimistic mood. A forest of cranes rising above the city center. Office buildings, shopping malls, hotels and an underground bus terminal will be built there.

There are any hardly power cuts, even though the air conditioning constantly running  in the glow heat of the summer. More and more Kurds to return from exile. Without fear of attacks, people stroll in the evening through the streets and parks, fountains provide cooling. The quality of life is improving daily. Some a politician dreams already of turning the city into a second Dubai.

"The good security situation is the key to success," said Kiwan Siwaily, technology consultant at the first private Kurdish oil company KAR. Siwaily gained at Ruhr University in Bochum his Ph.D. "We had no large attacks or kidnappings for years." Intensive to be protected above all the oil facilities.
